Congress has renewed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)! The extension will provide approximately $3.9 billion over the next five years to help combat domestic violence in this country.

While the United States has made considerable strides toward combating abuse in the last decade, four women still die at the hands of their partners and 700 are raped or sexually assaulted each day. This renewed legislation now emphasizes early intervention, a critical component of saving lives.

Amnesty International recently joined with the National Organization for Women and Break the Cycle to deliver a petition with 100,000 signatures to key lawmakers as they negotiated the final version of the bill. More than 90,000 of these signatures came from the petition hosted on this site.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this life-saving campaign to stop violence against women. Together we are making a difference.

Why We're Doing This

We're here for very personal reasons. Because our friends and family have been assaulted. Because we've worked at shelters or rape crisis centers and seen just how important VAWA is to getting services to women who need them. Because the number of women who are not is horribly, shockingly high. Because we don't want to live in fear. More >>

Logo Your efforts made a difference! Congress has reauthorized the Violence Against Women Act.

"This second renewal of the Violence Against Women Act is proof positive of lawmakers' commitment to protect women in the U.S. While this country has made considerable strides toward combating abuse in the last decade, four women still die at the hands of their partners and 700 are raped or sexually assaulted each day. It is particularly gratifying to note the current legislative emphasis on early intervention, a critical component of saving lives." -- Dr. William F. Schulz, Executive Director of Amnesty International USA
